Bikers create awareness amidst risk on the roads
Motorcyclists in the city spoke to Review about biker safety in an attempt to raise awareness.
POLOKWANE – There have been an increasing number of accidents involving motorcyclists around the city in recent months.
After a 17-year-old boy was injured when he fell off his motorcycle in an attempt to avoid an accident, Review spoke to motorcyclists in the city about biker safety.
Bike shop owner Eric Robinson, an avid biker for over 26 years, said the most important thing for beginner bikers is buying the correct gear.
According to Robinson, parents of young bikers should not purchase anything bigger than a 125cc motorcycle for a start.
“When starting out, there is a lot that people need to know and learn. Therefore, starting with a smaller bike will help the person to maintain control of the machine if something should happen,” Robinson said.
He also urged bikers of all ages, but especially young bikers, to ensure they get the needed protection for riding.
He said that a helmet, jacket and some gloves can make all the difference. “When an accident happens, the first thing to go down is your hands and then your head, so protect them; it will save your life,” he said.
Sapa Yopa Motorcycle Club President, Sarel Nong, has over 20 years experience and he suggests that parents look for a driving or skills development programme, something Sapa Yopa has on offer. “Having a skills development programme helps young riders be better road users and at the end of the day helps them be safe,” Nong said.
He urges parents not to allow youngsters to ride a bike without a licence.
Polokwane Police Spokesperson, WO Lesiba Ramoshaba, said that in the case of an accident, people should still open a case even if they are not sure what car the other person was driving. Let the police investigate, we have ways to find out things and investigate matters,” he said.
