Angry mob torch mayor’s vehicle in Bela Bela protest
Residents went on a rampage allegedly after the council made the decision to increase taxes.
LIMPOPO – Several people have been arrested for public violence after a building and the local mayor’s vehicle were set alight in a village outside Bela Bela earlier today (Tuesday).
“Residents went on a rampage and barricaded the streets within the township and those leading to the township allegedly in protest after the local council took the decision to increase rates by R500 said Police Spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.
“The police were forced to disperse the crowd with rubber bullets. It is still not clear if anyone from the community were injured during this incident.”
Mojapelo added that two police members sustained minor injuries when stones were thrown at them. Public order police members and the Nyala have been deployed in the area to calm the situation.
Cases of arson, malicious damage to property and public violence will be opened for investigation, he concluded.
