#WheelchairWednesday APD knows how to maneuver a wheelchair, do you?

'Maneuvering is especially difficult at mall and outside shops' - Lehlogonolo Hloni Rakolo, APD Placement Officer

POLOKWANE – The Fast Tools team, along with the Association for Persons with Disability (APD) Limpopo, joined hands and planned a Wheelchair Wednesday Challenge.

Participants were tasked with shopping for clothes and groceries while in a wheelchair so they could experience how tough these tasks are for people who are wheelchair-bound.

Lehlogonolo Hloni Rakolo, APD Placement Officer, demonstrated how a disabled person moves from their wheelchair into a vehicle and vice versa. This proved especially difficult to do at malls and outside shops with limited parking space for the disabled.

Rakolo explained the procedure of how disabled drivers park their vehicles, saying they should park close to the far left of the parking lane, and if the individual is in the passenger seat, the driver must park to the far right of the parking lane. This will allow enough room for their wheelchair to be placed right outside their vehicle door.

“I hope this tutorial goes a long way to assist individuals like me and help other people who might be new to this kind of situation,” Rakolo said.
