It was the turn of Mall of the North management to take on the APD Wheelchair Wednesday Challenge last Wednesday.
Marketing Manager, Mari Delport was tasked with entering and exiting her vehicle using a wheelchair. Following the successful execution of that task she departed from Centenary House to the mall where, still using a wheelchair, she had to withdraw money from an ATM, shop for groceries, fit a pair of shoes and do normal chores at her office.
After completion of the tasks Delport said that persons without disabilities take their fully functioning limbs for granted and more people should try and spend a day in a wheelchair to fully understand the challenges faced by disabled persons on a daily basis.
“For me the hardest part was definitely the vehicle challenge where my arms and upper body muscles had to compensate for my legs not working,” she said.
She further stated Mall of the North is without a doubt wheelchair friendly as it has various bathrooms allocated for persons with disabilities and that wheelchairs can move around with ease throughout the centre.
