Learners at Boetse Secondary School were surprised by a delegation of Vodacom Limpopo who visited the school and handed out 967 food parcels recently.
In the spirit of helping to address social injustices, Vodacom Limpopo invited their business partners, the Police, government officials and other volunteers to join their team in racing against the clock on 20 July to pack 5 000 food parcels within 67 minutes in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day and Boetse was one of the rural distribution points that were earmarked to receive some of the parcels. The rest are expected to be handed out by Gift of the Givers to households in rural areas who are in need, according to a media release by Vodacom Limpopo.
This initiative forms part of a larger project facilitated by the Vodacom Foundation, building on its annual food security drive in honour of Mandela Day, launched in 2013. This year, the project will see an estimated 50 000 buckets of nutritional food for children and families in need distributed to previously disadvantaged schools across the country. A total of R5,2 million has been spent on the packing and distribution of food parcels this year.
“This month we recognise Tata Mandela’s outstanding contribution to the creation of a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic South Africa. We celebrate his example of dedication to the values that promote conflict resolution, improved race relations, human rights and gender equality,” Chris Lazarus, Managing Executive for Vodacom Limpopo Region said during the handover.
“Vodacom, through the Vodacom Foundation has partnered with the Gift of the Givers in order to promote Goal 1 and Goal 2, which are: End poverty in all its forms everywhere and end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. “This is one of the best and befitting ways we can thank Tata for being an inspiration to the world.”
In the spirit to help promote social justice in South Africa, Vodacom has renewed its support of the global movement for #actionagainstpoverty and has re-committed a further R300-million to education over the next five years.
