[TAKE NOTE] Pick n Pay message doing the rounds is a scam

The message states that the retail giant is giving away vouchers worth R4 000

POLOKWANE – On Thursday evening, Pick n Pay posted on social media saying that the message being circulated on whatsapp and other messaging platforms is a scam.

The message reads: “Pick n Pay celebrates its 50th anniversary and gives away vouchers worth R4000 each! I have just received one from here:”

“We’ve been notified of a link doing the rounds on WhatsApp that leads to a site claiming that Pick n Pay is giving away a R4000 gift card on completion of a survey. THIS IS A SCAM,” their post read.

The retailer says they are not involved at all and are not giving away gift cards.

“Please do not click on the link or give away any personal information,” they warned.

Here are some online safety tips you can follow:
  • If it seems suspicious, it probably is. URL’s given in these messages are usually malicious links disguised as something familiar.
  • Look out for dodgy URL’s. These usually contain viruses that can get hold of your personal information.
  • If you feel you have been scammed, report it to the police, your bank as well as the retailer so that they are aware.
