Here is the buzz on bee stings

For most people, a bee sting is just a nuisance, however, If you’re allergic to bees, if you get stung multiple times, bee stings can be more problematic

POLOKWANE – For most people, a bee sting is just a nuisance. You may experience temporary sharp pain, swelling, redness, warmth and itching at the sting site, but no serious complications.

If you’re allergic to bees, or you get stung multiple times, bee stings can be more problematic. They can even be life-threatening.

This is something local schools are warning learners about as the season for bees is on hand and children at schools may get stung.

Severe allergic reactions may cause:

• Hives.

• Pale skin.

• Severe itching.

• Swelling of the tongue and throat.

• Difficulty breathing.

• Rapid pulse.

• Nausea and vomiting.

• Diarrhea.

• Dizziness.

• Loss of consciousness.

Keeping this in mind, here are some tips to avoid being stung at school:

• Avoid wearing perfumes or colognes that are sweet.

• Be mindful of what you eat and drink outdoors.

• Wear shoes outside.

• Avoid wearing loose fitting clothes as they might get trapped and sting as a result.

• Stay still and don’t swat bees, wasps or hornets.

• If you see bees, wasps, or hornets nests, inform a teacher to call a professional to have them removed.

Schools have a strong policy not to give medication to learners and this is enforced by the Department of Education. In cases where children may be allergic to something like a bee sting, medication for allergies may be given to the school by the parents in case of an emergency.
