Lifty Nkabe Makalela (41), suspected mastermind behind an alleged attempt to defraud the Royal Bafokeng Trust of R100 million at a bank in Burgersfort in July, appeared before the Praktiseer District Court yesterday (Wednesday).
According to Limpopo Hawks Spokesperson Matimba Maluleke, Makalela was arrested in Alexandra, Johannesburg on Tuesday and is expected to apply for bail during his next appearance on Monday.
Three other suspects, Goci Nwabisa (29), Tshepo Daniel Sehlapelo (27) and Aaron Madanda (40) have since appeared in court on individual days. Their appearances followed their arrest in July, on the same day they allegedly attempted to open a fraudulent account at the bank with the purpose of having the R100 million transferred to it.
Nwabisa was granted R3 000 bail while the other two were remanded in custody and are expected to appear before court again on 4 October.
Maluleke indicated that more arrests were expected.
