Colourful party wigs, hot pants and t-shirts with an electioneering message contributed to the fun had by members of the ruling party’s Ike Maphoto branch who took to the streets of their neighbourhood early Saturday for a fitness-related activity entailing a 5 km walk and 10 km fun run respectively.
A large turnout of young and old braved the 07:00 chill for a family affair. Parents – and dads in particular – were joined by their young along a circular route through Bendor that delivered them to the park opposite Oosskool where they initially started out.
The event formed part of the electioneering campaign of the branch. The run/walk for members of the branch residing in Bendor and Ster Park, joined by members from other branches of the ruling party, was preceded by a business breakfast held the day prior, when members of the women’s league affiliated to the branch met for a programme of fundraising dominated by messages of empowerment delivered by Small Business Development Deputy Minister Cassel Mathale as well as businesswoman and author Tsakani Nkambule.
ANC Ike Maphoto branch secretary Mosa Chabane afterwards referred to two successful events having been hosted by the branch and added that it was expected to lead to similar activities on the cards for after the elections. He said the branch would organise another morning marathon as part of mobilising residents to work for the ANC and encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle. With reference to the business breakfast, Chabane said the branch further planned another session for members of the business community to engage on issues affecting them.
