Twelve finalists of the Mr and Miss Curro Heuwelkruin in partnership and partially sponsored by Spar Thornhill collected 13 trollies full of food items for Meals on Wheels during a food drive on Friday.
The initiative was part of a pageant which aims to unearth inner beauty in participants. It was learnt that 60% of the contest was community service centred while 40% was made up of catwalks and interviews, among others. Educator and pageant organiser Irma Lottering indicated that six boys and six girls were remaining in the challenge that is set to conclude with the final event on 14 September at the school.
On Friday the 12 contestants handed out a list of goods to shoppers requesting them to buy and donate any of the items. According to Lottering, the finalists were competing for a worthy cause which is assisting charity organisations. She added that they wanted to teach youngsters good morals and encourage them to help others in any way possible.
Previous community work undertaken included reaching out to Adonai Children Centre in Westenburg, Ngwana Baby House, Pietersburg Provincial Hospital’s Paediatric Oncology ward, Polokwane SPCA and painting the fence at Heuwelkruin’s Pre-Primary school.
Lottering thanked Spar Thornhill, parents and everyone who supported the initiative and the finalists for taking time off their busy school schedule to make a difference in someone’s life.
