The Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (Ledet) will, in order to encourage a clean environment and the planting of trees in mitigation against climate change host campaigns in all five districts starting from today (Thursday) until 19 September.
The gatherings are reportedly aimed at raising awareness about the importance of tree planting, clean-up and recycling. Information made available to Polokwane Observer indicated that the first week of September is used to raise awareness on the value of planting trees in communities as they are important for human survival, improve the health and beauty of the local environment, enrich biodiversity, absorbs carbon dioxide and produces oxygen, reduces soil erosion and provide habitat, food security, and medicine for living organisms and generally contribute towards a greener future.
The third week of September is the national clean-up and recycle week and in this regard Ledet MEC Thabo Mokone urged residents to join his office in tree planting and clean-up events. The first gathering is set for today at Pitjeng ya Thuto Primary School in Ga-Mphahlele while the second is scheduled for Bungeni Community Hall in Makhado on 9 September. Ledet would continue with the campaigns in Bismark Village, Mopani on 18 September with the last two events expected in Ga-Malekane in Sekhukhune and Ga-Madiba Village in Waterberg on 19 September.
