POLOKWANE – The cream of the crop at Mitchell House were awarded for their hard work in 2019. A prize-giving was hosted at the school’s auditorium on 27 January and proud Gr 7 to Gr 11 learners and parents excitedly applauded the awardees who, after the ceremony, gathered for a celebratory dinner.
Headmaster Andrew Cook spoke about the importance of liberal education and not dulling children with channelled learning. He quoted Albert Einstein: “Everybody is a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
He added that intelligence comes in various forms and therefore needs to be recognised and celebrated. He reiterated that education should not negatively affect learning and that the school aims to promote learning so that the learner continues to learn beyond the education provided by the school.
He once again quoted Einstein: “The only thing interfering with my learning is my education.”
“I hope that tonight, we are not celebrating the dulling of your imagination and rewarding those who are the best at jumping through hoops that we create for them,” he said. He urged the learners to choose subjects that they love so that they can be able to put in their best work for it.
