Capricorn District Municipality’s (CDM) presented its 2018/2019 Draft Annual Report for public input during a public participation session hosted at Bolivia Estate on Tuesday.
CDM Executive Mayor John Mpe tabled the report and said that the object of the annual report is to provide a record of the activities of the municipality for the previous financial year, adding that it aims to provide a report on performance against the budget, to promote accountability to lacal communities for decisions made by the municipality and to account to the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC).
Mpe emphasised that Capricorn district is now the major contributor to the Limpopo economy with a share of 24%. “This economic growth shows that the sectors of our local economy have performed well in the period under review, but this has not translated into job creation, that is why we have developed a spatial development framework (SDF),” Mpe said and explained that the SDF informs people about economic development and opportunities in the district.
In terms of service delivery, Mpe highlighted that 96,1% of the people in the district are now provided with water and that 61% of households have got access to adequate sanitation facilities.
The municipality also embarked on various programmes to ensure that more people receive formall dwellings and 30,8% of the households have access to refuse removal. As much as 96,1% of households are connected to electricity and the district is served by three fire stations, being the Senwabarwana fire station in Blouberg and the Botlokwa and Lebowakgomo fire stations in Molemole and Lepelle-Nkumpi respectively. The new fire station at Ga-Rampuru is 96% completed.
In closing, Mpe emphasised that the municipality has moved from a Grade 4 to a Grade 5 category of municipalities and that it indicates that CDM is financially viable. “We are also happy that our Premier has mentioned in his State of the Province Address last week that CDM was the top performer in terms of Municipal Infrastructure Grant spending,” Mpe said.
