Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect who allegedly raped a 101-year-old woman after reportedly breaking into her house at Mogapeng village, Maake early on Sunday morning.
According to Provincial Police Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo the victim was asleep and alone in the house when the suspect allegedly broke in and raped her.
Police were notified about the incident and a case of rape is being investigated, according to Mojapelo.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has condemned the incident and urged community members to look after the elderly persons, especially women as they are often targeted by perpetrators who take advantage of their vulnerability. “Police members must hunt down the culprit and not rest until his arrest,” Ledwaba was quoted to have said. He also instructed members of the Social Crime Prevention Unit to visit the family and provide a report on the safety and security of the victim.
Anyone with information is requested to contact investigating officer Jenny Meyer on 082 469 2625 or report to the nearest Police station.
The Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (Dawn) in Limpopo has also strongly condemned the incident.
“This incident highlights the vulnerability as well as the plight of women in our rural communities.
It is clear that the African National Congress-led government continues to fail dismally to address exceptionally high numbers of women and children abuse as well as sexual offences,” Desiree van der Walt, Dawn Limpopo Chairperson stated in a press release. She added that Dawn would conduct an oversight inspection in the area in order to visit the alleged victim and further engage local residents to encourage women to break the silence regarding any kind of abuse they encounter on a daily basis, the statement indicated.
