Employees of the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (Ledet) who had to evacuate the premises on the corner of Suid and Dorp streets in September 2018 and moved to departmental headquarters in Biccard Street will seemingly continue to work in overcrowded offices due to the department’s alleged failure to complete the maintenance at their offices.
Officials evacuated the building amid claims that the structure might collapse at any time due to lack of maintenance. Initially it was reported that the department wanted officials to occupy offices located behind the building they had evacuated but the offer was declined following claims that asbestos had been used in the structure hence they might put their health at risk.
When Polokwane Observer followed up on the matter last week, departmental spokesperson Zaid Kalla indicated that a service provider has been appointed. Kalla could not indicate as to when that happened but outlined that they had worked closely with the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure on condition assessments and were awaiting a final report from the department on maintenance required at the facility.
He said measures were put in place to ensure that service delivery is not compromised and reiterated that alternative accommodation has been arranged and allocated to all affected employees. When asked about a tattered South African flag that is on display at the entrance to the state building, Kalla emphasised that the flag under discussion has been noted by the responsible unit within the department and a new flag will be displayed along with the upcoming refurbishment processes.
