Ruth’s vigour takes the cake

With each cake she bakes, her skills improve.

POLOKWANE – Just one look at Ruth Ramogale’s cakes will make you fall in love, even if you are not a sweet tooth.

Dreams sometimes take longer to come true because of the obstacles faced, but that did not get in the way of Ruth’s rooted love for baking. Ruth from Ga-Thoka, Paledi faced financial constraints when she had to take baking classes in 2015, but little did she know that an opportunity would come knocking at her door three years later.

“Everything changed in 2018 when I heard about a baking course called Bake Like Fari, which was organised by the owner of Fari’s Cake Shop in Johannesburg, Fari Mushonga. The three-day workshop shaped me into the baker I am today.”

Before she received training from Fari, she admired her and followed her work since 2016.

“Her cakes are clean and very attractive.” Ruth said that the she would not have received better training anywhere else. Watching baking shows such as Cake Boss also helped her improve.

“Every time I bake a cake, my skills improve. I feel more passionate about my work and motivated to continue, I feel like a boss baker.” After she opened Ruth’s Vigorous Cakes, the biggest challenge she faced was marketing her business and getting her name known, however, with her husband’s help, everything started coming together.

“He would post my cakes on social media and went to malls with his tablet to show people the cakes I baked and have them place orders,” she explained. Other challenges Ruth faced was the various icing designs clients would request. She would get a design she did not know how to make, but with practice she became better and better at it. Her dream is to have her own bakery and she believes in good time and with hard work and dedication, her dream will come true.
