Progress Milling Polokwane, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, recognised the efforts of subsistence farmers and cooperatives for their contribution to food security during their Agricultural Awards hosted in the city on Tuesday.
The cooperative and farmers who operate in Polokwane, Moletjie, Seshego, Lebowakgomo and surrounding areas were all awarded certificates of excellence.
According to Masenya Masenya, Communication Consultant for Progress Milling Polokwane, the farmers and cooperatives supply them with fresh maize and sorghum for production during the harvest season.“We are the biggest beneficiary of their harvest. They collect tons and tons of mealie meal and they bring it to us. They are doing a wonderful job, we also value their commitment and they put in a lot of hard work in ensuring that there is adequate food for everyone. We are also applauding those who collect and register the maize meal during harvest time. This is a classical example of public and private partnership, which is the way to go.”
“We are a university full of opportunities and development and we believe the certificates we gave them will come in handy when looking for funding and sponsors, which in turn, will enable them to contribute towards the growth of the economy in the province,” Masenya said.
Congratulating the farmers and cooperatives Jethro Nowata, Chief Director for District Services at the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said these are the people who always ensure that people are fed.
“Cooperatives and farmers support many families and they understand the importance of food security.
“They promote what we want and they also play a pivotal role in the economy and growth of the sector.”
