Limpopo learners attack teacher after being reprimanded

The two learners who were involved in the attack were arrested after the incident, says the police.

LIMPOPO – Two learners at Daniel Mubva Primary School in Ravele attacked a teacher with a knife after they were reprimanded for having illegal substances on the premises.According to reports, the two learners, aged 18 and 15 chased after the teacher with a knife and then slashed the tyres of his vehicle.

The incident occurred on 16 April. The Vhembe District Senior Manager for Education, Shumani Ravhuanzwo, and the Soutpansberg West Circuit Manager, Christina Ramovha, visited the school and SGB to meet with all stakeholders of the school on Monday, 19 April. According to several parents, security at schools is lacking and this leaves the door open to violence. One parent, Mashudu Mudzielwana, said that she was shocked to hear about the incident, adding that the school had a responsibility towards learners in terms of safety.

“How is it possible that learners carry weapons to school without anyone knowing? We blame the school for not protecting the learners against such dangers. We believe that learners must be searched before entering the school premises to make sure that no weapons are brought onto the premises. When we send our children to school, we entrust them to the safety of the school, but they fail us,” Mudzielwana said.

The MEC for Education, Polly Boshielo, said that schools were centres for teaching and learning, not centres of violence. “We want justice to take its course against learners who commit crime inside school premises. We call upon parents and guardians to join hands with the police and educators to ensure that schools remain a safe environment at all times,” Boshielo said.

The two boys were arrested and appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 21 April. The court outcome is not yet known.
