Hearty and wholesome meals
Chantelle Vergueiro started a project to feed people three times a week.
Earlier this year, while Chantelle Vergueiro prayed for a lady who suffers from HIV/aids, she realised there are people in the community who needs a nutritious meal daily.
“God told me I should start feeding people who cannot afford a proper meal. It was in March when we started with the project to feed people three times a week, and we had to go out and look for them. Now, we barely manage to stay ahead to cater for everyone,” she explains.

The drop-off point for these home-cooked meals are at the Methodist Church and Chantelle says some of the people who receive food now also attend church. The youth manages the Friday evening meals while another group manages the Wednesday morning meals. Chantelle and her group are in charge on a Monday afternoon. “We give them stew, either beef or chicken, with vegetables, bread and a fruit. Sometimes we can offer them fruit juice. We rely on donations to feed the people and volunteers prepare the meals. Some of the needy also ask us for things such as jobs, shoes, clothes and even magazines.”
Chantelle will host a women’s seminar on Saturday, 1 May to raise money for the project. There will be two sessions, one at 08:00 and one at 13:00. The topic for the morning session is ‘bereavement’ and the afternoon session is ‘supporting teenagers’. Both sessions will have a guest speaker. Tickets cost R200 per session and includes cake and tea. The address is 74 Biccard Street. For more information contact Glenda at 083 731 0677.
