Getting nutrients from your own veggie garden

POLOKWANE – It is no secret that children are prone to not loving vegetables and in most instances refusing to eat them.
Lizzy Altenroxel, owner of Greener Tidings Garden Centre and a mother give some tips to get children gardening.
“Choose vegetables that grow easily and are easily identifiable. Red cherry tomatoes and yellow cherry tomatoes are small and very tasty. They grow easily and children can pick them and eat them without cutting them. Just wash the fruit before you eat it”, Altenroxel said.

Herbs are also a favourite as they grow easily and can be frozen or dried if not being used freshly. Herbs that work well in the garden are basil, chives, mint and thyme.
“The herbs work well as the children can mix them and add other food items such as lemon juice or strawberry pulp to make drinks or freeze them. They learn to experiment with different products. The more you pick the herbs the better they grow.”

Gooseberries, strawberries and blueberries along with citrus are also some favourites to grow in the garden.
Lizzy advises parents to create an area in the garden where the children can plant and pick the fruits of their work as well as where the family can spend time together.
“Build as many memories as you can, it will last long into the future.
