Handling failure after receiving matric results
Now is also the time that you might see signs of possible suicide in a friend or family member.
POLOKWANE – The results of the 2023 National Senior Certificate exams are out and after 12 years of hard work and dedication, the lives of matriculants will change.
Some missed their distinctions by only a few marks while others may not be able to go to university as they hoped.
Dreams are scattered and some people might think it is the end of the world. Polokwane Observer spoke to clinical Psychologist, Zelda Buitendag, about how to handle failure.
“Take a walk or do an activity that will help you get rid of the disappointment, anger or frustration. You can also listen to upbeat music to lift your mood or sad music to help you cray. Music always helps to calm a person down.”
• Indulge in a book, series or movie that will help you deal with the constant repetitive thoughts for the moment, because this can be overwhelming.
• Cooking and baking can be therapeutic too.
• Mindfulness can help to relax you, take time to calm down and focus on breathing.
• Talk to a friend, counsellor or therapist as this can help to share and reflect on feelings and thoughts.
• Write in a journal. This may help to realise your thoughts and self-talk that might be getting out of hand.
• If you are not coping, get professional help.
