Greenest Municipality award for Collins Chabane Muni

The Greenest Municipality Competition coincides with the launch of the 2024 World Wetlands Day, which is celebrated under the theme Wetlands and Human Well-being.

LIMPOPO – Collins Chabane Mayor Gezane Shadrack Maluleke has dedicated their recent Greenest Municipality award, to the workers in the municipality.

Collins Chabane Municipality was named the third greenest municipality in the province during the Limpopo Provincial Greenest Municipality Competition held in Polokwane recently.

Collins Chabane was the only municipality in the Vhembe region competing with among others, the Greater Tzaneen and Polokwane municipalities.

The Greenest Municipality Competition aims to promote improved service delivery that restores community pride and commitment to caring for the environment.

Maluleke said he wanted to congratulate Collins Chabane Municipality workers, led by municipal manager Richard Shilenge and the Department of Community Services, for creating a sustainable environment for future generations.

The Greenest Municipality Competition coincides with the launch of the 2024 World Wetlands Day, which is celebrated under the theme Wetlands and Human Well-being.

This year’s theme shows the critical role played by wetlands to people and nature underscoring the intrinsic value of the wetlands ecosystem, their benefits and services including contribution to sustainable development. Wetlands provide resources for humans, particularly in times when climatic conditions are rapidly changing.

MEC for Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism Rodgers Monama, said the purpose of the Greenest Municipality Competition is to recognise, celebrate and award the performance of the municipalities that participated in the 2023/24 Provincial Greenest Municipalities Competition.

“The Greenest Municipality Competition is one of the programmes that Ledet implements to support municipalities to develop and implement green growth or green economy programmes.

“It also serves to provide an environmental management service delivery audit to municipalities, which enables them to improve the services they provide.

He said the 2023/24 Green Municipality Competition assessments have uncovered positive improvements in some municipalities towards delivering better services on some elements of the programme such as tree planting to mitigate climate change, education, and awareness to society about general environment management and including the services provided by municipalities to communities.

“Most of the disposal facilities are not managed as expected and in line with the license conditions of such facilities. This has led the department to take legal action against such municipalities as a way of ensuring compliance with the license conditions.

“The competition has also strengthened cooperation and coordination of programmes across the three spheres of government to improve the sector services.

“I would like to thank all the mayors of all the district municipalities, local municipalities, MMCs and councillors who provided continuous support to their locals during their participation in the Greenest Municipalities competition.”
