Blaq Queen receives Turfloop Arts and Music award
Best Lekompo artist, Blaq Queen counts her blessings saying she has a great team in Marvin Larrys Records that supported her from the start.
POLOKWANE – Blaq Queen has won an award as best Lekompo artist at the Turfloop Arts and Music Awards.
The singer and songwriter from Unit F in Mankweng can now add ‘award-winning’ to her description after she won the award in December. The 21-year-old, whose real name is Mapula Mametja, said she was initially anxious to go to the ceremony out of fear that she may not win an award.
She was nominated as best Lekompo artist and best female artist of 2023.
“I believe in myself and love my work, and that night brought a smile to my face,” she said.
Blaq Queen is a firm believer that small things prepare one for bigger things, and her nomination and win motivate her to do even bigger things in the industry. She hopes this will also inspire other talented musicians.
Blaq Queen’s interest in Lekompo music or Limpopo Dance Music, brought to the spotlight by artists like Makhadzi, Kharishma and Shebeshxt, started in high school when she was part of a choir in her school.
It was then that she discovered her musical gift. She also counts her blessings saying she has a great team in Marvin Larrys Records that supported her from the start.
“Imagine having a team that helps you independently with everything, including publishing, distribution and development. I am truly blessed,” she said.
She previously said she would like to one day have a record label and a studio in Mankweng where young people can develop their talent.
