Polokwane man needs help to have facial growth removed
Ishmael van Schalkwyk says the growth grows at a fast pace, but that the doctor who saw him last did say it was not malignant.
POLOKWANE – “It has been coming for years, and is getting worse.”
This is according to Ishmael van Schalkwyk (21) who realised a few years ago that there is a growth on the tip of his nose that is getting bigger in size.
In 2019 he first visited the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital from where he was referred to Mankweng Hospital.
“I had to stay for two weeks, and then they told me to go home, without even looking at my nose. Two or three months ago I once again visited the hospital. This time a doctor saw me but told me he did not have his appointment book with him and therefore could not help me with an appointment. He did take my number and said he would call me, but I am still waiting.”
In the meantime the growth on Van Schalkwyk’s nose is still growing, causing him pain and embarrassment. At times there is a discharge from the growth.
“Before this growth, I had an active social life and not a worry, but since it has become this big, I do not go out anymore. I am shy and have no self-esteem. I even struggle to find work as business people do not want to employ me.”
Van Schalkwyk says the growth grows at a fast pace, but that the doctor who saw him last did say it was not malignant.
Besides his social life, the growth affects his breathing too, especially at night.
“Every time I go to the hospital, it costs me money. As I have no work, that is a problem. It is a fee of almost R100 to see the doctor and then transport of about R40. If I cannot see the doctor, I have to pay this amount again when I return. I just wish a doctor would take a look at my nose.”
