Limpopo’s R83.11b budget: Here’s what stakeholders think

A local NPO and an opposition party member react to this year's provincial budget speech that was delivered in Polokwane.

POLOKWANE – Provincial Treasury MEC Seaparo Sekoati delivered the 2024/2025 Limpopo Budget speech at the Polokwane Municipality Council Chamber this morning.

Sekoati announced the allocation received from National Treasury for the 2024/25 financial year will be R83.111b.

Reaction:

Polokwane Observer spoke to two stakeholders to hear their reaction to the MEC’s allocations.

Malebeko Sadiki from the NPO The Lentswe Laka Foundation says: “We commend the allocation of R13.317m in the 2024/25 budget towards combating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

“While we appreciate this effort, we express concern that the allocated funds may be insufficient in addressing the magnitude of this societal challenge. As an organisation not funded by the Department of Social Development, we rely on personal contributions to combat GBVF, emphasising the need for a comprehensive approach. We question the factors influencing this budget and seek clarity on the allocation strategy to ensure effective impact. Our hope is that this critical issue receives the attention and resources it deserves for a meaningful impact on the lives affected by GBVF.”

EFF Limpopo legislature member Tshilidzi Maraga feels the MEC was unclear on the provision of proper housing for ordinary citizens.

“His speech also did not provide hope on unemployment, especially for the youth. I am also curious if the R70m allocated towards improving provincial matric results includes overtime compensation for teachers and other staff dedicating their time to the cause. This is with an understanding that the first financial year’s allocation is inclusive of R1.596b for wage-costs. My other understanding is there is R150m made available for the appointment of 143 permanent doctors. I am just wondering what fraction of the overall unemployment rate on doctors this is, and hope it is enough.”
