PEPPS learner to represent SA at world debating championships
Khathutshelo Mainganye, a young thinker with a love for human stories and poetry, is set to represent SA in the World Debating Championships in Mexico.
POLOKWANE – PEPPS College’s Khathutshelo Mainganye has earned a coveted spot on South Africa’s national debating team, and will represent the country at the prestigious World Schools’ Debating Championships in Mexico later this year.
Mainganye’s remarkable achievement was recently celebrated at the South African Debating Blazer Ceremony, a distinguished event that recognises the top debaters selected to carry the nation’s hopes on the global stage.
Her journey into the world of debate began years ago, sparked by watching her sister participate. Now, Mainganye is blazing her own trail, proving herself as one of the brightest young thinkers in South Africa’s debating circles.
For Mainganye, debate is more than just argument and rebuttal – it’s about empathy, insight and uncovering the human stories behind complex institutions. She is particularly drawn to motions exploring anthropology, sociology, and history, explaining that she finds these topics rich with meaning and humanity. She smilingly admits in contrast, that “economics lacks soul”.
Outside the debate room, Mainganye is equally expressive. She enjoys reading Sufi poetry, writing essays and short stories and sketching in her notebook.
