Eagle’s Nest fosters love for reading in foundation phase
Eagle’s Nest encourages reading in the foundation phase, aiming to help learners build strong literacy and cognitive skills.
POLOKWANE – Eagle’s Nest Christian School’s foundation phase (Gr 1-3) adapts and develops a love for reading as soon as the child begins the phase.
Primary school Principal, Bertie de Lange tells Review that reading in the foundation phase stage is very important for a child’s development, as it establishes a strong foundation for future learning.
He adds that on reading days, the learners choose their favourite story books in class that they want to read and sometimes have to read out loud in front of their class mates.
“Reading a variety of books, that are also age appropriate, helps our children develop cognitive skills, language, and comprehension, fostering critical thinking and a love for learning. It also enhances social-emotional skills, building self-confidence and empathy.”
He explains that reading story books that also have pictures to show are incredibly beneficial for young children in the foundation phase because it is fostering crucial literacy skills.
“Books with pictures enhance comprehension, vocabulary, and imagination, while also engaging children in critical thinking and emotional growth.”
He concludes that Eagle’s Nest promotes reading, whether at school or at home.
