Dentist visit teaches Polokwane toddlers proper brushing habits

Dr Elvis Kgasago visited Local Toddler to teach children proper brushing techniques and provide basic dental checks, promoting oral health.

POLOKWANE – We’re all taught from a young age to brush our teeth every morning and evening, but knowing how to do it properly is just as important as doing it regularly.

Unfortunately, many children never learn the correct technique. Establishing this healthy habit takes consistency, and if the routine slips, young children, especially playful four-year-olds, are unlikely to remember it on their own.

To support families in building this habit, Dr Elvis Kgasago from Your Local Dentist and his team visited Local Toddler on Friday. Their mission was twofold: to conduct basic dental checks and to teach children the right way to brush their teeth.

During the visit, he examined the children’s teeth for cavities, gum disease, and misalignment. Children requiring more thorough assessments were provided with referral letters for follow-up visits.

Henriette Grobler, the owner and head of Local Toddler, regularly organises visits like these as part of the school’s wellness initiatives.

“Children often listen to professionals more attentively, reinforcing messages from parents,” she said. “Not all children visit a dentist regularly, so we provide a basic check-up. Meeting a dentist at school, which is a place they know and trust, can ease their fears and reduce anxiety about dental visits.”

These small steps go a long way in helping children feel comfortable with dental care and start healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
