Radio-controlled aircraft fly-in thrills Polokwane crowds

Model aircraft enthusiasts gathered at Area 51 RC Flying Club for a fun-filled fly-in event, showcasing impressive displays.

POLOKWANE – Radio-controlled model aircraft enthusiasts enjoyed a day of fun and excellent weather at the annual fly-in that was hosted by the Area 51 RC Flying Club at the Polokwane civil airport on Saturday.

More than 20 pilots, some with more than one model on display or to show-off as they did fly-passes, entertained a crowd of spectators with a promise to return on Sunday for more fun.

The event was well-organised and the strictest safety measures were observed to safeguard the pilots as well as the spectators.

Stalls with enough to eat and drink were provided and colourful gazebos contributed to the ambience.

Some of the models were propelled by batteries while some even used Jet A1 fuel, contributing to the ‘real’ feel.

The chairperson of the Area 51 RC Flying Club, Martin Erasmus said that the annual fly-in is a highlight on the club’s agenda and that it has attracted visitors from Gauteng, Mpumalanga and nearby Tzaneen and Duiwelskloof.

He explained that membership of the club is open to all and that the youngest member is 11 years old.

“We offer advice and training for new members and assist with the procurement of second-hand equipment and the building of models from scratch,” he added.

The club members meet on a regular basis and are always ready to share information and Erasmus invited everyone to join the club.
