Top tips for first-time car buyers from a sales expert
Daniel Selomo shares key tips for first-time car buyers, from budgeting and financing to asking the right questions.
POLOKWANE – Being a first-time car buyer can feel overwhelming. With so many options and important decisions to make, it’s easy to feel unsure. A car isn’t just a vehicle – it’s an extension of your lifestyle and should offer convenience, reliability, and peace of mind.
Polokwane Observer spoke to Daniel Selomo, a car salesman with nearly a decade of experience, to shed light on what first-time buyers should keep in mind when making this big decision.
According to Selomo, the most important factor is affordability. He stressed the need to determine your budget by factoring in not just the purchase price, but also the down payment, financing costs, insurance, fuel and ongoing maintenance.
“It requires proper research and planning. Many new buyers don’t fully understand the financing options available to them, and that leads to complications later in the contract. To avoid that, ask as many questions as you can.”
Choosing the right car model can also be a challenge, especially with so many brands and models in the same price range. Selomo suggests that age and future needs should influence your choice.
“Think ahead and choose a car that will still serve you well a few years down the line,” he advised. He also stressed the importance of understanding the service plan and warranty, as well as considering fuel efficiency, reliability and safety features.
Selomo strongly recommends taking a test drive to make sure the car is comfortable and fits your daily needs. If you’re buying a second-hand car, he urges you to check for signs of damage or needed repairs and to bring in a trusted mechanic to inspect the vehicle thoroughly.
Finally, Selomo reminds buyers not to make assumptions. “Ask questions every step of the way,” he said. “Seek clarity, and make sure you understand the terms and conditions. The more informed you are, the better the decision you’ll make.”
