Thohoyandou residents launch CPF to fight crime

Residents of Muledane and nearby areas launch a Community Policing Forum to tackle rising crime and improve safety through police partnership.

LIMPOPO – Residents of Muledane village and surrounding sections, including block J, Mvudi and Muledane M and H, have taken a stand against rising crime in their area by launching a Community Policing Forum (CPF).

The CPF aims to help reduce serious crimes including house robbery, murder, cable theft, rape and burglaries at schools.

The launch took place on Saturday at the Makweta Sports Ground, where 10 community members were elected to lead the initiative. Dr Lufuno Ramabulana was chosen as chairperson, Nyambeni Masera as deputy chairperson and Mashonelo Nwovhe as secretary, alongside additional members.

According to Nwovhe, the community had experienced high levels of crime for some time, particularly cable theft and home burglaries.

“We decided to act and approached the local police in Thohoyandou. They responded quickly and supported the formation of our CPF,” he said.

Before the launch, CPF members were trained by Thohoyandou police officers.

They were taught how to support crime prevention efforts without taking the law into their own hands. “We were told to always involve the police if suspects are caught, instead of handling it ourselves,” said Nwovhe.

Adella Munyangane, CPF chairperson at the Thohoyandou Police Station, said that CPF structures are community-driven and play a vital role in reducing crime.

“The CPF should work as a team to protect the community from all forms of criminal activity.”

Ward 18 councillor Tshitereke Nelushi welcomed the launch and expressed hope that the initiative would lead to safer streets.

“We were tired of living in fear, especially during load shedding when cable theft increased. We believe the newly elected CPF will serve as foot soldiers in the fight against crime.”
