LIMPOPO – The bail application of Dakalo Nemangwele (34) who was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Mudzunga Ramalata (29), was postponed once again during proceedings at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday.

The court awaits the decision of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on whether the case should be transferred to the regional or high court, with the next hearing scheduled for June 30.

Nemangwele is facing charges after Ramalata’s body was discovered on January 22, dumped in the bushes along the N1 in Kromdraai in the Free State with multiple gunshot wounds.

The incident, believed to be domestic in nature, sparked national outrage and is being treated as a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) matter.

Family spokesperson Vhutshilo Ramalata confirmed the family would continue to oppose bail.

“This is not just about our family. GBV has become a national crisis. Granting him bail would send a negative message to other perpetrators and would be like rubbing salt into our wounds,” he said. He warned that releasing the suspect would trigger public outrage, potentially inciting unrest among the community of Mutale, where the victim was buried during an emotional funeral in Dzimauli, Harambuda on February 2.

Nemangwele is not the only one implicated in the case. Two other suspects have been arrested:

• Evans Mundalamo (24) was arrested at his Tshamutumbu home on January 22. He was found in possession of two unlicensed firearms, including a hunting rifle and ammunition. He appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody for further investigation.

• Tshilisisanani Mboweni, another suspect, initially misled police by claiming that Nemangwele had crossed into Zimbabwe for spiritual reasons. Further investigations revealed this claim to be false, and that he allegedly conspired with the accused. His licensed firearm was seized during the investigation.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson, Col Malesela Ledwaba, Nemangwele handed himself over to the police in Musina on January 24 after being on the run.

The couple, originally from Hamabila village near Ngalavhani in Vhembe, had been reported missing at the Moroka police in Gauteng on January 17, the same day the murder is believed to have taken place.
