Welgelegen left in the dark as 15-mini-substations fail

Welgelegen residents and businesses have been hit by a prolonged blackout after 15 mini-substations failed.

POLOKWANE – A municipal team is expected on site this morning after a technical fault left 15 mini-substations without supply, leaving residents and businesses in the Welgelegen area without power for more than 15-hours.

This is according to feedback given to residents on a local electrical WhatsApp group.

The Polokwane Municipality said a significant portion of the area is affected and that teams are working to identify the source and restore supply.

On Sunday afternoon, municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala said there was no estimated time for restoration but that every effort is being made to resolve the issue as swiftly and safely as possible.

“Residents are advised to treat all electrical wiring as live and to switch off all electrical appliances during this period. This is to prevent the risk of injury, loss of life or damage to appliances when power is restored,” his statement read.
