Mitchell House stresses the importance of reading

Teacher Rosy Lopes said parents are able to strengthen and build relations with their children through reading.

POLOKWANE – Mitchell House’s Early Childhood Development Centre held a reading session for learners at the school on November 4, aimed at inculcating the importance of reading among children and parents.

The session saw parents assisted by teachers, reading various African story books to the children. The learners enthralled their parents with African songs.

Lindy Bartlett, head of early childhood development phase said with the session aimed to promote the importance of reading to children.

“We had African stories and animal stories which the parents read to their children. We wanted learners to expand their language and vocabulary. Reading grows the imagination of the children and stories can take them to different places.”

Kgabo Mashamaite, one of the parents, reads a book to Shekienah Dilebo.

Teacher Leah Weir said reading is important for child’s development.

“We wanted to expose them to various languages and printed words. This was an opportunity for them to develop and enjoy reading with their parents.”

Lucy Talane, Thabiso Magagula, Tharego Masokgomo, Sipho Xaba, Edwin Mackays, Nikita Crewe and Dylan Crewe are also in attendance.

Another teacher Rosy Lopes said through reading they will have better learners.

“You cannot study if you cannot read. Through reading, parents are able to strengthen and build relations with their children. Children are able to expand their knowledge and learn more.”
