Noorderland chess player Lesedi Molele dominates district tournament
Polokwane teen Lesedi Molele outplayed 46 competitors at the Polokwane Open Chess Championship and claimed district honours.
POLOKWANE – He may be just two years into the game, but Lesedi Molele is already becoming a name to watch in local chess circles.
The Gr 8 learner at Noorderland High School recently made headlines after winning a trophy at the Polokwane Open Chess Championship, where he outplayed 46 other competitors.
Lesedi began playing chess in Gr 7 and quickly discovered not just a talent, but a passion for the sport.
“I enjoy the tactical side of chess. It’s challenging but fun,” he said.
His most recent success came at the Capricorn district’s seventh chess match qualifier, where he represented his school.
Competing in five rounds, Lesedi scored an impressive 4.5 points, earning him first place in the district.
Despite his rapid rise, Lesedi acknowledges the sport is no easy ride.
“Chess is tough, but also very rewarding. Anyone who wants to play must be ready for strong competition, but also ready to enjoy it. You’ll lose sometimes, but every loss is a chance to grow,” he said.
Lesedi credits chess with helping him grow personally as well as competitively.
“Chess has taught me to be more strategic and to think ahead. I’ve also learned grace, because I don’t always win. I had to accept that early on and just keep working to improve,” he said.
