New Horizon teacher wins national award for inclusive teaching
Elna Mileham from New Horizon Special School has won first place at the National Teachers Awards for excellence in inclusive teaching.
POLOKWANE – Elna Mileham, a dedicated teacher at New Horizon Special School, has been recognised with first position at the recent prestigious National Teachers Awards for excellence in inclusive teaching, earning the honour of representing the province at national level.
The award celebrates teachers who go beyond the curriculum to ensure that no learner is left behind, and Mileham’s career embodies that spirit.
A career rooted in compassion
With three years of experience teaching learners who are deaf, blind and physically disabled, and 16 years teaching learners with intellectual impairments, she has built a career rooted in compassion, patience and advocacy.
For Mileham, teaching is more than a profession – it is a calling to uplift learners who are often overlooked by society.
Her classroom is a space of belonging, where learners are encouraged to embrace their uniqueness and build the skills they need to live more independent and dignified lives.
Her colleagues at the school rallied behind her throughout the competition journey.
A personal challenge to grow
She explained that entering the competition was not in pursuit of a trophy, but as a personal challenge to grow, reflect and step outside her comfort zone.
“This award is not just about personal success, but about shining a light on the intellectual community and the difference teachers can make in learners’ lives,” she said.
Mileham carries with her the pride of her school, her learners and the entire province.
