Winter school’s all about the studies

The winter school holidays are usually the longest holidays of the school year, when learners can enjoy resting at home. But this is not so for Capricorn High School gr. 12 learners, who have to attend a winter school during the school holidays.

POLOKWANE – The winter school holidays are usually the longest holidays of the school year, when learners can enjoy resting at home. But this is not so for Capricorn High School gr. 12 learners, who have to attend a winter school during the school holidays.

Review asked the learners how it felt to be coming to school during the holidays, how winter school helped them and if the winter school helped them prepare for the trial examinations.

Endy Mabelane said waking up early when everybody was on holiday was not nice. “But it is all worth it because winter school helps me catch up on the work I missed. It keeps me in study mode and always studying. Teachers are also giving us tips for the trial examinations.”

Nicole Staddon said: “it is very depressing to have to wake up early during the school holidays to go to school. But it gives us the feeling that we are in gr. 12 and we are grown up now and things are different. The winter school helps us catch up with school and revision. The time and the individual attention we are getting now is not like in class, where the time is short”.

Palesa Mathapo said waking up, especially when it is too cold, was not nice. “But we really have to do it, because none of us want to stay behind and not go to university. The classes are really helping us a lot, we revising things we did in the first and second terms which we have forgot and they will be out in the trial examination”.

Puleng Mollo also agreed that waking up early to go to school while everybody else slept, was not easy. “But it is good to know that we are learning and the classes are really helping us a lot to catch up with work and the things I missed. And we are being taught how to deal with pressure from the examinations.”

Temo Motene said: “It is not easy waking up to go to school when all my siblings are sleeping and not going to school. It takes self control and maturity because we are not focused to attend the winter school, only those who want to come can come. It helps us catch up on the work we missed and revise what we already did for the coming trial exam in August”.
