The sports grounds of Hoërskool Noorderland is certain to be a hive of activity on 30 April when the provincial finals of the Danone Nations Cup for Primary Schools takes place there.
Thapola A Nkola Primary School (Mopani), Benny’s Sport Development and Academy (Vhembe) and Sekakate Primary School (Sekhukhune) have already qualified for the event while the winners of the district rounds in Waterberg and Capricorn will be known by the third week of April.
“We should have finalised the names of the schools last month but we were delayed by the school holidays. The schools will battle it out at in the district finals in the third week of this month to determine the winner who will represent each school at the provincial finals,”Nombuso Kunene from Intune Communications representing the Danone Nations Cup, explained.
Benny’s Sports Development and Academy will have their third go at the provincial title, an achievement they managed in 2013 and 2015. The national title however still eludes them.
“This is the first time that Sekakate Primary School qualified for the provincial finals which is a great achievement for a rural school where the kids rely on the school feeding scheme to get a solid meal every day.
Thapola A Nkola Primary School played in the 2013 provincial finals but were knocked out by Benny’s in the final match,” Kunene said.
The winning school at the provincial finals will represent the province at the national finals scheduled for June. The winning province will represent the country at the world finals in France in October.
