The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in partnership with Vodacom has applauded efforts by Limpopo born athletes who continue to raise the province’s flag at national and global events. During a celebratory event held in Polokwane on Tuesday Comrades Ultra-Marathon runners who excelled in this year’s race – Ludwick Mamabolo, Rufus Photo and Charles Tjiane – were among those honoured for their achievements.
Boitumelo Moila, the first woman from the province to participate in a clipper race across the Pacific Ocean was also recognised for her groundbreaking spirit.
Special mention was made of Limpopo’s Softball Men’s team that won the Softball National Championships in Polokwane in March and Baroka Football Club who were recently promoted to the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Nandi Ndalane said the province was proud of all the athletes for achieving great things in their different sporting codes. “They worked hard and they have shown commitment in all competitions and we are proud of their success. Every athlete will tell you that the Comrades Marathon is blood, sweat and tears, but what brings joy to their faces is participation and reaching the final line,” Ndalane said.
“As for Baroka Football Club, their determination has seen them easily walking to the Premier Soccer League. But what people don’t know is the amount of preparation that goes into winning and above all staying in the league.
“What we don’t want is a team that would disappoint us this season and end up in the relegation zone. We want consistency, we want commitment, and we want the fighting spirit that you showed from the previous season to continue in the PSL. We want you to stay afloat,” Ndalane stated.
