The team of Benny’s Sports Development and Academy are off to the national finals of the Danone Cup on Saturday when they will face the other provincial winners at WJ Clements Stadium in Reiger Park, Boksburg.
The Venda based team achieved a 1-0 victory over Sekakate Primary School from Burgersfort to win the Provincial finals of the national Danone Nations Cup held at Hoërskool Noorderland Sports field last Thursday. Striker Xolani Muleya scored the winning goal from a penalty spot after defender Jabu Khaya was fouled in the 18 yards area.
It was a clean sweep for Benny’s who also won the Mille war cry competition with their creative and highly entertaining song for which they received an extra set of kit.
Head Coach, Mbishi Mokwena said they excited to win the provincial finals and they are looking forward to do well in the national finals of the competition. “It means a lot to the boys. They have done well in the competition and shown that they want the title.”
He admitted that they were looking forward to compete with the best schools in the country in the finals. “We were in the finals before and we know what to expect. We have prepared well for the challenge,” Mokwena said.
On the road to the finals Benny defeated Mopani finalists Thapola A Nkona and Capricorn finalists Bolahlakgomo Primary School. Their opposition in Saturday’s finals will come from Bakerville Junior Secondary School (Eastern Cape), Witsieshoek (Free State), St Joseph’s Kulani Primary School (Gauteng), Mthethomusha Primary School (KwaZulu-Natal), BM Mokitime Primary School (North West), St Helena Bay Primary School (Western Cape), Nancy Shiba Primary (Mpumalanga) and Van Rensburg Primary (Northern Cape).
Winning the national title will give the team an opportunity to represent the country at the Danone Nations Cup World finals in France in October.
