Premier Stan Mathabatha has congratulated Magezi Football Club for gaining promotion into the National First Division.
Magesi, based at Kgabo Park in Moletjie, won the ABC Motsepe National Play-offs final after playing to a 1-1 draw against Kings United and then claiming a 5-3 victory on penalties at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Sunday.
The winning cheque for R1 million will give them a solid foundation for their upcoming campaign in the professional ranks.
They will join their provincial counterparts Black Leopards Football Club in the 2016/17 National First Division (NFD) season set to commence in August after the Uefa Euro Championship League.
“There must be something we are doing good in Limpopo to have more than two teams succeeding this season,” Mathabatha said and reiterated his call to the people of Limpopo to go all out when their teams play in local stadiums and elsewhere.
Sport, Arts and Culture MEC, Nandi Ndalane said: “Coming from a resounding victory and ascendency of Baroka Football Club, Magezi Football Club has done us proud. All I can say and still repeat is, Limpopo is the mecca of football. Magezi FC has a number of players who are a hidden gems. Senior clubs will be overwhelmed by the depth and skill that this club has. A big thumbs up to the good work done by Jacky Ledwaba and his team.”
