Three players affiliated to Limpopo Softball Association (LSA), Kwena Nkune, Kamogelo Makolomakwe and Ronald Kekana will jet off to United States of America (USA) on 21 July to represent the South African Softball u.19 Team at the u.19 Junior World championships to be held in Michigan from 24 to 30 July.
Nkune who plays for Motlolo Softball Club in Sekhukhune area, Makolomakwe (Lebowakgomo Wild Beast) and Kekana (Moletlane Texas in Zebediela) said they are hoping to do well in the championships.
“It is an honour to be selected for the national team and we are happy. We are looking forward to the trip and the championship and we hope to bring back home silverware,” Nkune said on behalf of his provincial teammates.
Benny Boshomane, an Executive Member of LSA who will accompany the national team said the three will join team members from other provinces in Kempton Park in Gauteng on 17 July for a camp. “There will be a three day camp before the team leaves for the USA. The camp will also give players time to bond and get to know each other’s strengths,” Boshomane said.
He said LSA would love to see more players from the province in the national team in future.
“We are happy and sad at the same time because we want more players in the national team from the province. Other provinces have five to six players in the team and we also want more. We are calling all young players in the province to give their all in all domestic and provincial matches in order for them to be selected in the national team. We want a strong representation next year,” Boshomane said.
The trio was selected during the National Softball Championships for u.19 provincial teams held in North West Province, Mafikeng last June.
