For the more than a dozen players who competed in the Capricorn district darts trials at Mimosa Hall on Saturday it was all about accuracy, a keen eye and nerves of steel to try and make it to the district team.
Limpopo Darts Association secretary, Susan van Jaarsveldt said these were the first trials since the beginning on the year and players selected will represent the district at the South African Darts Championships to be held in Gauteng next July. She said the junior players did not participate in the trials due to the year-end exams being written at schools.
The district team will consist of six male and four female players while the provincial team will cater for six of each gender. The junior team only accommodates two girls and two boys.
The association’s president and Capricorn District Darts Association chairperson, Hendrik van Jaarsveldt indicated that players good enough to get chosen for the provincial team have an increased chance of being chosen for the national team. He further said every district was allowed to send two teams to the nationals being the district team and the association team.
He added that darts is a family sport and called on residents to join for the province to have enough players. Hendrik emphasised they are willing to teach and train people who are interested in the sport and reiterated that darts makes families bond. Susan pleaded with businesses and the Provincial Government to assist the association financially so that they could participate at the nationals. She concluded by saying the provincial trials will only be held in January.
