There is little to be taught to a man who has run the Comrades Marathon 23 times.
At the age of 55, Polokwane Athletic Club (PAC) runner, Pienas Magashule will be running his 24th Comrades this year and is not planning to stop any time soon.
“My goal is to complete 30 Comrades marathons. It has been a longstanding dream and as long as I remain healthy and able I will run until I have done my 30th race,” he said.
His best Comrades was in 1986 when he finished in 6:37. He is admits that he doesn’t race against the clock and only runs for the personal achievement of completing the race before the cut-off time.
“I do not have a special diet but try to eat food high in carbohydrates and lots of meat and eggs which are rich in protein. This year I completed only three 21 km races in preparation for the Comrades,” he said.
