A squad made of 22 workers from different farms in Limpopo is expected to travel to Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria on 11 November to play two friendly matches against Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants SuperSport United Football Club.
The farmworkers were selected by South African soccer legends Mark Fish, Eddie Motale and Chris Manoka during the Game of Stars football tournament for farmworkers Limpopo finals held at a resort outside Polokwane on Saturday.
The players will also undergo a training camp at Tuks High Performance centre in Pretoria on 10 November.
According to Lourika Vlietstra, representative of the Mark Fish Foundation, the organisers of the tournament, the camp will focus on developing the players’ as individuals both physically and mentally, teach them what teamwork on and off the field should be, create a spirit of sportsmanship we have seen a lot of football talent from our farmworkers.
“This is an opportunity for them to showcase their talent to the world. This is also a way of appreciating them for the wonderful work they are doing because without them we would starve. They are young, talented and fit and our wish is to see one them signing a professional football contract with one of the professional soccer clubs in the country,” added Vlietstra.
Vlietstra said the names of the selected players would be announced in due course.
