Limpopo cricket back in action for 2021 season

The CEO of Limpopo Impala Cricket (LIC), Tommy Phiri, said the 2020/21 season of the Limpopo Premier League will start on 28 February after a long lay-off due the Covid-19 pandemic.

Phiri said they met with all the club’s chairpersons and executives and resolved that matches should run until 9 May.

“We also resolved that the women’s league will start on 10 March and end on 24 April. The promotional league will start on 28 February and end on 6 June.”

Phiri said only 10 clubs from various areas in the province will take part in the league as compared to 32.

“We have decided to reduce the number so that we will be able to manage the clubs and ensure there is compliance. We will follow all the regulations and protocol relating to Covid-19. Clubs are advised to identify their own compliance officers, who will then liaise with the LIC compliance officer during the season. Clubs that do not comply will be removed from the league.”

He stressed that they are excited to be back on the field. ” We must admit that it is quite difficult not to play matches. There was a lot of anxiety among the players and the administrators. We could not afford to postpone the matches at the risk of losing the support of our stakeholders,” concluded Phiri.

The Chairperson of the Eagles Cricket Club, Dewald Weterman said they are happy to go back. ” This is the best decision by the LIC. Everyone is itching to start playing again. Mentally and physically, we are ready.”

Guido De Marre, the Chairperson of Aces Cricket Club said the decision has been long overdue and the players cannot wait to get back. ” We are excited with the resumption of the league and we cannot wait for our first match.”
