Tebogo Macheke to don Protea cricket colours

Tebogo Macheke of Limpopo Impala Cricket Club was recently selected by Cricket South Africa to be part of the Women Emerging Squad that will play international matches in Bangladesh from 27 March to 14 April.

The 21-year-old, who plays as wicketkeeper and batswoman for Limpopo Impala senior women’s team, has been a stalwart for her side in the past two years.

“She played at Northerns Cricket two seasons ago and has been consistent since joining us. She is the only cricketer from our team to get national recognition and we are proud of her. We wish her all the best and believe she will do well,” said her coach, Neo Sekokotla.

Macheke is excited to be given the opportunity to represent the country on an international front.

“I was at home when my coach told me that I was selected for the national team. I did a small traditional ceremony at home with my family to appease and thank my ancestors for the opportunity. I have been working hard and waiting for this moment for years. It has always been my childhood dream to don the national jersey and I cannot wait.”

She said the call-up will prompt her to work harder and cement her position in the team. “I want to be like AB de Villers. I just like how he used to play cricket. He was in a class of his own and made the impossible possible. I want to emulate him and for me to achieve that, I need to double my efforts.”

Impala’s Chief Executive Officer, Tommy Phiri said Macheke’s inclusion in the national team formed part of their plans of ensuring their female cricketers are included in the national team.

“Women’s cricket is a priority to us and we are happy that our strategic plan is working. It means a lot to to us to see one of our players in the national team. She is a pillar in our team and a key example to her fellow teammates. We are happy for her.”
