Talent galore at Western Mounted Games

Horse riders from in and around Polokwane competed at Winnfield Stables in Dalmada for a spot in the South African Western Mounted Games.

POLOKWANE- Horse riders from Polokwane and surrounds took to Winnfield Stables in Dalmada this weekend to show off their Western Mounted skills and compete for a spot in the Limpopo horse riding team that will compete at South African Western Mounted Games.

The games are set to take place in Parys in the Free State from September 29 to October 4.

Equestrians enjoyed being cheered on by their supporters, who attended the event with picnic lunches amid a friendly family-orientated atmosphere.

The event organiser, Michelle Oliver, said to be elected for the provincial team, horse riders had to display proper horsemanship, horses’ flexibility, agility and knowledge of the sport.

“We were happy with the turnout. We had a lot of horse riders from Polokwane, Tzaneen, Louis Trichardt and Waterberg, It was a good day, and riders and their families enjoyed the day.”

She said they are currently finalising the team.

“We were looking for 130 horse riders for the team. While we are still in the process, we are very happy with the talent we saw on the day.”

Mariette van der Westhuisen, provincial chairperson of the South African Western Mounted Games said the selected team will compete against 500 horse riders from various provinces at the national event.

Oliver thanked the owner of Winnfield Stables, Wilma Venter for hosting them. “Our gratitude also goes to Winnfield Stables for the lovely day. The ambiance was great and horse riders enjoyed riding at the stables.”
