Exciting clashes in Top 4 crowned champs

KGABO FC proved to be a force to be reckoned with when they edged KUPTAS FC out to be crowned champions of the TOP4 Soccer Challenge which was held at the Extension 75 Sports grounds on Sunday.

The club from Extension 44 needed a 5-4 penalty shootout victory to take the R800 prize home after the two teams had played to a 0-0 draw at the end of regulation.

En-route to the finals, Kgabo FC outclassed Dynamic FC with a 2-0 score line, while KUPTAS FC scored a late winner to claim a 1-0 win over 71FC to make a date with Kgabo FC.

The final match started at a blistering pace with both sides searching for an early goal, but a scuffle amongst players almost killed the rhythm of the match. The referee had to work overtime to calm the situation and the match continued with tackles all over the pitch.

The animosity continued during the penalty shootout, setting the scene for nail biting finish to the tournament.

The organiser of the tournament, who is also the head coach of Dynamics FC, Robert Mahwai, said he was pleased with the standard of football and vowed to organise a much bigger tournament in the near future.

“Now that some leagues are in recess we need to keep our players fit and ready for action. We also want to keep them busy so that they do not get bored and think about committing crime.

“We do not have any sponsors but that will not deter us from uniting the teams and promoting tolerance amongst arch-rivals,” Mahwai said.
