Drivers battle for chequered flag

The Polokwane Oval club championships was action-packed, with drivers vying for the chequered flag on Saturday evening.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Oval club championships was action-packed, with drivers vying for the chequered flag on Saturday evening.

In the 1660 modified saloon class, Heath Bent took first place. JJ Fourie and WF Weideman took second and third place in this class respectively.

The race had to be stopped for a few minutes after Johan Hatting and Sammy Bent collided on the track after Hatting lost control of his vehicle on a corner. The drivers did not sustain any serious injuries, and after the vehicles were cleared and towed off the track, the race continued.

Roelof van Breda won the 2.1-litre modified saloon class, followed by Ettiene du Plessis and Desmond Bosch.

“The 1660 class was action-packed and the 2.1-litre class was also well contended, and was one of the highlights of the evening’s racing,” said Stephan Weidemann, Polokwane Oval promoter.

In the Super Saloon class, Piet Venter got the chequered flag, followed by Phillip de Wet in second place.

One of the highlights of the evening was Allas Pienaar winning the hotrod class. Stephan Weidemann and Phillip Jacobs took second and third place respectively.

In the rookie class, 13-year old Dylan Bosch took first place in his VW Golf, followed by Marisha Badenhorst (VW Golf) and Roean van Breda (1400 Nissan). Willie Blignaut took first place in the stockrod class, followed by Nico Grebe and Tienie Kloppers in second and third place respectively.

On September 6, racing fans can look forward to the best hotrod, stockrod and 2.1-litre modified saloon drivers in the country competing at the oval track at the Polokwane show grounds in the South African National Chamionships.

The next Polokwane Oval club championships will take place on October 11.
